The Duck Thread

Well I noticed something today we went outside for the first time ever and the stayed close to me. Even followed me in the Yard. I sit with them often. I have even tried to sing to calm them down. And I'm sot sure if the age. Got them from Tractor supply.

my ducks does anyone know the breed pekin maybe? i have had them for 6 months now, 3 were female and 2 males we decided to eat one of the males and it was good. i plan to incubate the eggs in the spring for more meat birds. the eggs are big and they have laid every single day since coming in to lay...

I would always keep 2 drakes. I say this because I raise Cayuga's and we had only 1 drake for our flock and we had a neighbor dog come over and kill the only drake we had. Which ment we had to go out and find another drake but we went and found 2 drakes instead of 1 just so we have a back up. I would say hatch some out and keep a drake for back up because you never know something might happen to one of them. We have 6 females now and 2 males but we started with and went the first year with 2 females and 2 males. Well the second year the first year we hatched we had 2 females and 2 males, the first year we had them we couldn't hatch do to no male.

I never imagined I would love these ducklings so much. I am going to try the pea thing one day to see if it changes their minds about me. Also I really think I have a male and a female!! One quacks louder than the other.

I'm such a sucker for a cute baby animal!

When do runner ducks start laying? I seen anywhere from 16 weeks to 6-8 months. Mine are 20 weeks; 9 females, 1 mutt drake who has been very attentive. I dont open the duck house until 8am.
They seem happy - 2 ponds, fresh water, mixed poultry crumbles, a scattering of scratch and in the evening, peas for treats. Suggestions welcome. Thanks.
