My uncle and I went to a family in the hills above Sacremento once on a dinner invite. The place was the kind of place where chickens came in and out of the house along with the dogs. When the wife began cooking dinner (chicken I think) she had a tin sitting on the window sill above the sink about 1/3 full of bacon grease and other used frying oil. When she scooped out some for the chicken I noticed a mouse swimming in it and she scooped it out first and threw it out the window then put the grease/oil in a cast iron skillet that was not clean and started cooking the chicken. She had some patato salad on the counter that the cat was eating from and I said "hey your cat is eating the patato salad" she said "oh he won't eat much". The plates that were used were not washed but looked as if they had been wiped by hand... not a rag but by a hand and the spoon given was filthy but I wiped on my shirt very well before using it. We did eat dinner but I assure you we never went there again near dinner time. I should add that they had at least 10 dogs and all of them were sitting at the table and after about 10 minutes they all had several inches of drool hanging from the corners of their mouths. My guess is the licked the plates after the table was empty of people. My plate had egg and something else on it from breakfast as I remember.
