Blue Copper and Splash Copper Marans Discussion

I don't know if anyone else has run across this with the marans, but I notice that some will be very short legged and others way long, I have both here and have been working to find that happy medium in the development in the line of birds I have here. I notice that the shorter leg ones can be the same weight as the longer ones, but because they sit lower to the ground, will give the appearance of being smaller.

without seeing the chart, I'd guess they are scissor cut V's
Yes, I use a small pair of scissors and only make one slit, do not need the V. With the punch just make sure the punched skin comes out of the hole, if not take your finger and wipe it out or it will grow back. This is the way we have done this all my life.

Vicki, I have never ran accross this problem as I never use the shorter females. I much prefer the larger loking fowl.

yeah, the one young blue copper male and the lightest colored BCM. They both have other really good stuff about them, so looking forward to what they add to the program.
Just in case some are not aware. The earlier hatched fowl wiil tend to get larger, so with large fowl it is best to hatch early if you are working with size.

right, as they age, their growth will separate them to make them into V's. Thats what people always call them around here, probably a local thing

I only have one set of birds I got from hatching eggs that are shorter legged, when crossed, they make beautiful birds with just the right leg length for me. I don't notice any negative pattern in breeding them either.

I agree with this, if it wouldn't make me crazy, I'd do more winter hatching, but there is always the issue of where to keep them til it warms up. I'm always afraid we'll have an extremely late winter and have all these crazy munchkins to contend with haha

Hello everyone, I've posted a few times in the main marans thread. Since I only have the blue copper marans variety, I thought I'd post over here. I only have 2 blue copper marans a cockrel & a pullet who will be 1 year old in april. My cockrel doesn't have much copper color on his saddle & has to many points on his comb. My pullet is clean shanked but very nice blue & copper color I believe. I'll try to get some pics with top & back views since I know that's what you will want. Untill then what do you think?
