Fermented Feeds

Fermented feed will not do well in a tall PVC feeder. How many chicks are you getting? I feed my flock of 15 in standard plastic dog feed bowls from the $ store, but have recently made a gutter feeder for them. My chicks are using the gutter feeder I made them yesterday, and it is working well. No more food fights.

I am just getting my first chicks ever (have horses on my farm, first time for chickens!) this weekend and live in NW Indiana and noticed you live nearby....and I'd like to use the fermented method of feeding, what brand do you recommend for my new babies? How long do they get "baby" food? My coop will have the tall/vertical pvc type feeder, can i use fermented food in this or do you think it will get stuck in the pipe? Thanks, in advance for any help/tips! Lisa

I get my feed from a farmer in Crete IL who gets it from wolf co op in N. Indiana .. They don't have the product I get on the web site.

It is a milled feed and the birds really like it... I feed the babies in a lid for the first week and then in a short container that hummus comes in LOL .. they get starter for a month or when I run out, then they get grower until they lay.....when the small container is to small. they get it in a rain gutter w/ 2x4 feet and an old goat trough that hangs on the cattle panel.

Thanks! This is all very helpful. Since you live in my area....about what age will they be ready to go outside in their coop....and once they know that is "home" what age can they free range?
if you are raising them under a heat lamp, about 6-8 weeks they can go out.. when they are fully feathered... I use a heating pad and they feather out sooner... take them on day trips for an hour or so on warm days first.. I have a hardware cloth pen because they can get through a 2" opening.

until they are big they are easy prey for any predator, but I have them in the poultry yard when they have been out in the coop for a few weeks... I don't let them free range the property for a couple more months... but I have a dog and turkeys that help chase off predators.
