New Zealand Kiwi - I want some!

Ok, so I am late to this thread, but I can attest to most of the NZ birds you have mentioned being as pretty in person as they are in pictures. One thing I enjoy about speaking to my parents on the phone is the various birds in the background (all wild). Tuis are fascinating to watch with their glossy plumage, but I really enjoy listening to the bellbirds.

And yes, I am originally from NZ and my parents live there.

Shall I make you jealous?? I am from New Zealand.
I have a couple of families of tui living in my back yard (Mum, Dad and at least 1 teenager in each family unit). They have the most beautiful calls. I planted a large part of my garden specifically to attract the tui...in fact the flowering cherry trees are in full blossom and the tui feed there each morning.
There are many pukeko around here too. They are also known around here as swamp hens and are a blooming nuisance as being a territorial bird they are vicious and will kill any of my chicks they come across.
My favourite though would have to be the fantails. We have quite a few of them around here and they are so friendly. It is said that they will lead you home if you are lost in the bush. Maori say that they foretell death in the family and having one come inside is extremely bad luck. In our family, we say that they are the souls of our family who have gone before us, and are coming in for a visit.
