Turning a Treehouse into a Coop

My dad built a tree house about 12 years ago and since we don't really play in it anymore we're turning it into a chicken coop. We are surprised on how sturdy the tree house still is after all these years, but we're replacing wood here and there. My dad said it's about 100 square feet which I think is quite enough room for 5 chickens. Here are some images:

 

Chicken wire will be put over all open areas.

 

 

I wish I take a whole picture of the inside, but it didn't fit in the camera.

 

We're going to take the electrical wires and TV out (unless the chickens would like to watch TV.)

 

Underneath will be the run. We'll put a opening under the tree house along with a ramp for the chickens.

 

I was wondering if the chickens could roost up here, or is it too high? Will the chickens use a ramp up there because we'll be using sand as bedding and I don't want them to jump down and possibly hurt their feet. Though, these will be perfect for hanging their feeders and water.

 

 

Well, that's all for now. As you can see we've changed the entrance into the tree house, there will be a door that I go through in. I'll update with more pictures as we progress with this project... unfortunately it won't be very often since my dad works a lot during the week, but I won't be getting my baby chicks until April so we have plenty of time to finish this.

That is great, room for 20 plus Chickens easily

Consider replacing the floor at least under any perches with Galvanised wire mesh so the poop drops through - miles easier to clean up like that

Sand on the timber floor if that is what you mean may be very heavy.

 

A double or even triple ramp may be necessary - experiment.

 

Where are you going to place nest boxes and if up high can you reach into them to retrieve the eggs?

 

You will not have Grass in that area for long :)

That is a very nice treehouse.    I can see it as a coop too.

Sounds and looks like it'll be a great coop. You may need to experiment with ideas for them to get up there, make sure you use a strong wire like hardware cloth for any openings. I will be watching for progress thumbsup.gif

That tree house is going to make one unusual and nice chicken coup, Great idea!

How in the world can we appreciate when we are lost in the sea of all the world's trappings? This is what the majority of our society has chosen, or been duped into, and this is why our society is as bankrupt as it is today. Back to basics does not mean deprivation; it means back to life!

I think that will make an awesome coop.

Great idea to turn that into a hen house. Instead of a ramp you should build a chicken elevator a "chickavator"lau.gif

Have 100 layers, 50 Plymouth barred rocks, 50 Rode Island Red, 300 broilers, 50 turkeys.
