Rooster Spurs?

That's not fun! I hope they maybe get along better as time goes on.
Thanks

I really hope so too!

At about what age can a rooster really injure a hen with his spurs? Does full growth of the spurs correlate with a rooster tending to become meaner, in general, to his hens?

A rooster with sharp, long spurs can accidently severely wound a hen. The rooster is NOT "meaner" and does not intend to hurt the hen. When he covers her, his spurs can puncture her in the side under the wing, cut her side & you won't know it necessarily until an infection sets up in the hen (unless your checking that site frequently), and she starts "showing" her injury. I know because this has happened to me. If you watch them, roosters try to place their spurs so they are not hurting the hen when they cover; however, sometimes the angle of a spur is so that it can wound a hen. Sometimes, I have not discovered such a wound until the hen healed on her own but other times, I have had to isolate the hen after she showed injury. Now I trim or remove spurs on roosters when they reach between 1-2 years so I can avoid this problem.

I just adopted a rouge rooster who showed up to visit my new chickens. He is a gentleman and has been very polite and seems to be looking to join our flock. He has HUGE spurs and keeps digging holes in my lawn with them. (He seems to be possibly make nests in an attempt to appear useful?)
I am scared to try and remove the spurs myself. Is there somewhere I can take him to have them removed? The vet?
