I'm just a beginer in photography.
Can't give a definitive recommendation because I don't have any formal training or in depth experience.... I did just buy a nikon coolpix p530 to use as a stepping stone as I learn....it has much better speed pick up, focus and zoom ability than your basic point and shoot pocket cameras but not the expense of the SLR cameras.
I'm not ready for the multiple interchangeable lenses yet...will step up the investment in another couple of years.
I think the camera choice is so dependent on the type of use you expect ...indoor/outdoor...action shots vs scenery, portrait vs live action... do you want it video capable, does it need any particular weather protections, etc.
Many posters on this thread have provided their camera specifics for some shots.... you may be able to search this thread for the word 'camera'.... that may seem an odd choice since this is a photography thread but it seems (to my memory) that often when someone wants to know about a particular picture they usually ask 'what camera did you use' or 'what camera do you have'.
Good luck in your searching for a new camera and hope to see pictures soon!
