Hey there,

I am currently working on a flock management software and would like to know what you would like to see in it!

Currently i have
Egg Recording including,
Weight
if it was fertile
Date Laid,Set,hatched,
Breed

Sales & Expenses
Poultry Order system ( keep record of who ordered what)

Poultry Information System that includeds
ID Tag,
Name,
Sex,
Date of Birth,
Date of Death,
Breeder,
Comments, of the bird
Images of the bird (coming soon i hope!)

Everything can be exported to Microsoft office word. I must say that exporting is crude, so does not look the best.
What features would you like to see in the flock management software?

Good to see you're still working on that! For me, ease of use is the thing. My favorite system for keeping track of eggs is just a grid where you fill in with the number of eggs for that day. Or if keeping track of each hen's laying, a grid with dates across top and names horizontally, a check or something in each cell. Often software like this has you fill in the date, then this, then that, etc etc and it just gets to be a pain to use. A visual grid is so much easier for egg stuff.

For breeding, etc. the database system works fine though.

I would like to see one on just breeding for those who are into show birds or specific breeding purposes like that. Why I say that I got from one of the Ag colleges(can't remember which one) an on line spread sheet available for free down load for everything imaginable for the business side of any poultry operation (could be used I am sure for rabbits and other animals that require similar housing and care-taking as fowl).....

Still working on it.

@oldrooster.

I am aming this for the hobby farm/small. So this would be handy to have for show breeders with the comments section, you can track birds by id's right now. I also plan on adding a pedigree section( if requested). As well as a growth section. I also plan to be able to relate chicks to one of the cockerels you have, and hens etc.

@galanie

thanks. I well see what i can do for that as well. So what you want is something where the hens are listed on the side. And just to tick a box if they laid? I must think how to do that. I know it can be done.

Call Ducks, You writing this from base or are you using something like Access/Oracle/SQL? I'm really, really interested in your program. :)

Under egg collection it would be interesting to see the date autopopulate with the option to just enter the number of eggs only, or enter the number of eggs and then have a drop down with each hen's name and an option to click a checkbox next to their name. Then when a report is run (either to screen or to print), you will have a list of the total eggs for each day (displayed with the dates across the top) and then the hens down the side with checks showing up on the dates that they laid. Would be possible to then even graph the results to show the hens productivity over X period of time based on the data collected, etc.

It would be preferable for me if there was a breeder egg section and a non-breeder egg section, since I will be having a mix (those who are intended solely for egg production and then my breeders).

Under the Poultry Information it would be interesting to have father's line and mother's line brought in along with if the chick winds up being culled or bred. If culled, a field for entering the reason would be good.

A cause of death memo field would be good, too. Lets you look back over the years to see what % loss to predation, illness, culling, etc.

Anyway - just some ideas I've been tossing around for information I'd like to track. Dunno if anyone else would find such information useful or not.

I am using PHP, along with MySql. With how easy it is to install say WAMP. i think this approch is ok. I am going to have my installer make the database, insert tables etc. So all the end user well have to do is download WAMP (or xampp,Mamp,Lamp), navigate to the installtion and extract the zip.

I have a jQuery calender come up for where it says date. I thought about auto populating. But think the calendar is a good medium.

thanks for the feed back. You guys gave me some great feed back!

Make it so you could use it for any bird line.... and allow you to go into a backdoor and redo it's look so you personally can retool the basic programming to work with any animal species you want to sell it for, small animals like rabbits, ferrets, and also dogs and cats, it might make more work for you now but in the future it might be well worth it....

The table idea I suggested was only for keeping track of egg production. I'd think the interface in the screen shot would work fine for breeder eggs. Course with the option to create a new tab or section exactly like an existing one, you could then have a section for each flock and be able to choose which interface you wanted for each.

Just throwing ideas around.

So here's what i am thinking

Eggs
-Breeding/hatching
- production/eating

Now time to plan!

Hey guys,

Just an update, i am working on a function to be able to clone records. And working on adding an WYSIWYG editor (same idea as the one found on BYC. Just a more simple version).

Still thinking about the egg UI's.

What about a breeding flock section? Where you could create a flock than select the birds in it.
