As promised here is a pic of George with his slicked back look...maybe he's a rooster from the 50's. The Minnesota winter shorted his wattles a bit too. Thanks for the great post, glad Roger is doing well too.

Oh Martha! he did get it didn't he?! I thought he'd have some of his tips left but they are gone! Wow. Yep I can see the wattles are shortened too...can see how they contracted like Roger's did. Wow. This winter. I hear you need to hunker down again for another winter backlash! I hope it melts fast at least for you guys! Thanks for sharing George's new look with us. It gives people an idea of what to expect with this and if they chose to deal with it...how things will turn out for them. George looks just as sweet as ever.

Thanks for sharing on the thread. Your imput only made it better...that's for sure. Stay safe in your winter storm down there.

Good Morning BYC Peeps. Here is Roger this morning --August-- shorter with less comb and wattles. Watching the yard for his girls and getting ready to crow into the morning Sun. It seems like forever we were taking care of black combs and wattles and here it is a 95 degree day ahead with 100% humidity. Just a little Summer follow up for all of you. Enjoy your Iced Tea everybody!

So how are the Northern Boys doing this winter? We had a few days of your negative temps here in the South. Hopefully that is over. My kids are out of school today because now that everything is thawing out there are so many frozen pipes that burst they are calling to preserve water. I'm off from work today and went out to make a good inspection of my roos. The Welsummers have the largest combs and seem to have only a few tiny spots on their combs. That may be due to being locked in the barn for 4 days with the flock, turkeys and goats.

Roger is fine this year. All his extra fragile comb gone...he's naturally dubbed. What remains is quite thick and vascular and able to maintain enough warmth to not freeze again I hope, any further. He was real quiet those cold days during the "Polar Vortex" I didn't realize it until yesterday morning when we climbed to 18 degrees. He heard me going into the feed cans and started crowing-- I could hear him in the coop.

We've had quite a few days, as you can imagine, locked up in the coop...but now we've got some warmer ones going and into next week for a good spell...so life is good again.

Stretching our chicken legs in the run a bit!

I'm a year late, but so glad your rooster made it! I just realized that you really have struggled with frostbite -- you went through a lot with him Great job!

This thread also reminded me that, even though my rooster has frostbite this year, it's nothing like what I went through last year. Maybe the changes I made did make a difference! :)

Today we had 26 degrees and I laid down some old bedding on my snow path so they could come out and get some sunshine on their backs. Yes this year is much easier with everybody...although I think I have a hen with some laying problems. That's a whole other can of worms. Chickening is not for whimps!
