It wasn't just a little rain shower she was in.  It was sheets of rain, unlike we usually get in Idaho.  Not something chickens would choose to be in.

Kandy, I'm very sorry to hear that, and I'm sure that both you and your little boy are very upset.  Hopefully you'll be feeling better tomorrow after trying so hard to save her.  .

Panting can mean that she was in pain also...
I'm so sorry you lost her.

I'm sure the todler falling on her didn't help and was probably what killed her!! I'm truly not trying to be mean, but she was probably hurt cause your son fail on her, which caused severe pain, which caused the panting....Would you allow your son to do that with a dog, then get mad cause the dog bit your kid and then of course, want the dog put down???? What ever happened to common since and parents actually watching their children, ANYTIME they're around animals. And YOU thought it was CUTE???? Think about what your hen probably went through!!!!

I believe your hen's panting may have been respiratory distress. Its possible she inhaled water while caught in the rain and down on the ground. She may have had water or mud in her lungs.

I'm sorry your hen died. And I really don't believe your son "loved her to death".
