Current Movies - Thumbs UP or Thumbs DOWN

The only people who repackaged the ideas and made it new was Disney by appropriation and j.k. Rowling by straight up copying
Are you familiar with Dune? I don’t want to post spoilers, and thus the reason I didn’t elaborate about the list.

But yes, Star Wars is a straight copy of Dune. Not in plot but in characters, concepts, and imagery.

For example, the Jedi order and the Jedi mind trick are straight ripoffs of a religious order from Dune with Force-like abilities, including the ability to override a person’s will through voice commands.

Dune came about a decade before Star Wars. The similarities behind the two franchises are so similar that I did some research and Frank Herbert, the author of Dune, was very vocal about Lucas’ appropriation of his works and accused Lucas of doing just that on many occasions.

Herbert apparently kept writing Dune novels into the 1980s and in one of the last ones he slipped in a dig at Lucas where Herbert wrote that in Dune’s universe, a “three P-O” for a slang word for person who surrounds themselves a cheap ripoffs or copies of valuable items. So if you’re a person who surrounds yourself with forged artwork, you’re a “three P-O.”

Of course, that’s a jab at C3PO from Star Wars and is saying that Star Wars is a cheap imitation of Dune.

I’m a fanatical Star Wars nerd. But I think Herbert was right. Dune is the more compelling universe and Star Wars is clearly derivative.

Imitation and emulation are common tropes in all creative arts. Even people who are producing largely original works are standing on the shoulders of the people THEY took influences from to drive their creative inspiration. Nothing is new anymore, it's just a different retelling of an old idea. Some examples from Dune itself. The Bene Geserit are inspired from Buddhism and jesuit Christianity. "The Voice" and the concept of mind control has been commonly associated with witchcraft since the dark ages. The Fremen are Heavily influenced by Islamic Bedouins and more Buddhist themes. Paul is a flawed messiah, common in almost all religions. The great houses are basically Renaissance Europe in space. Herbert didn't come up with these themes, he just drew from his interests and influences and tied them all up in a bow with his own rich world-building.

There is no doubt that Herbert considered SW a ripoff of Dune. He was quite vocal about it. The similarities are definitely there. Whether or not Lucas intended it that way? Only George knows. As a fan of both, I'm just glad we have them both and I enjoy them both at face value as entertainment.

I would distinguish between Herbert drawing from history and human culture, and Lucas just mostly drawing from Herbert.

Its long been known the battle scenes from Star Wars are shot by shot recreations of WWII war footage and documentaries Lucas was familiar with, with the real-world weapons and planes substituted with the things of Star Wars. I didn’t think much of that as I presumed the rest of Star Wars was original, except for Lucas borrowing a few things as homage to John Carter of Mars, which was written a couple of generations prior to Lucas. But I now see some of the most iconic scenes and ideas from Star Wars came from Dune. I just remembered that even Luke’s Death Star trench run where he turned off his targeting computer and let “the Force” guide him came right out of Dune where Paul “I’m Both Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader” Atreides turned off his guidance equipment in the sand storm and let his mystical powers guide his equivalent of an X-wing through the storm.

I just so have the blahs about Star Wars after Dune. The trailer to The Acolyte looked underwhelming. Asoka was “meh” except hey, “its Thrawn.” Most of the new Star Wars stuff is meh. And then I realize that none of it was really great except Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi (the first Star Wars directed by Lucas suffered from the same bad acting and dialogue as the prequel trilogy). Really, I’m into Star Wars for the mythology and world building. And now that I know a lot of it is from another source, I think I’m over it.

I think Paul Atreides is all around cooler than either Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader. Change my mind. Or not. ;)

Today we saw "Arthur the King." True story of a dog that adopts an adventure cross country racing team and ends up getting adopted in return. The Princess cried - she goes 35 stars, and I go 3.
I would really like to see that film. I'm hoping for it to be shown on UK netflix 🤞

A film that impressed me was starring James Mcavoy and called "My Son".

About an astranged father that finds out his son had been snatched by men to deliver to disgusting child abusers.
He goes to any lengths needed to save his boy.

Not the usual story and it had me hanging on the edge, I was throughly hooked

I never saw Dune so I can't speak to this but I accept your points. Tbh I love the Harry Potter series regardless of it's a copy of a copy. I enjoyed the books growing up and I liked the movies as well.

I have been reading all the Dune books long time ago.
I only saw the first Dune movie. But it was definitely not as good, and sometimes different, from the books.

I might reread the books if the library has them. Good thing with fantasy is that its timeless read. Asimov. Pratched, Orson Scott Card …. So many wonderful books 📚
