my chicks are 3 weeks old and starting to fly out of brooder its almost 3' high can i put chicken wire over top of box im concerned they will hurt themselved while trying to get out

I would recommend either putting chick wire over the brooder or draping a net with tiny holes loosely over it. Good question!

I put a screen on the top of mine until they went into the coop. Have you tried putting something in the brooder for them to perch up on? They love some time of entertainment. Hope this helps

i have a perch in all 4 corners its my australorps that are venturing out lol i still have sum coop wire i may drape over they even fly back in when i go close to there brooder like they know they did a bad thing lol

My girls did the same thing. I would keep the wire on when your not around and if you have some time at the end of your day go out and let them have some fun. But chances are their flying habits won't go away. I think it's mean and didnt do it but you can always get their wings clipped.

Getting a chicks wings clipped is harmless to the chicken. It's like a haircut for a chicken! I would suggest clipping one wing to keep them off balance when they fly so that they don't get out of the brooder. Good luck!

I free range our egg layers so it's important to me not to clip a wing. I want them to be able to fly away from predators. If you keep them in a coop all the time then there is also no need to clip their wing. Sounds like it is time to move them out of the broader and in to a coop. Or put wire cloth over it.

temp. still gets below 50 degrees here but i do have 2-250 watt heat lamps the hen house is 8'x8' when below 50 degrees should i put 1 or both lamps i will put straw on floor my girls will b 4 weeks next week

when u put my chicks in the coop when nite time comes and temp is below 50 how low to the floor of the hen house should i hang s 250 watt heat lamp ? the bottom of house is natural ground and i may put straw on floor in case sum of my chicks decide not to roost on perches
