Please help me understand meat eaters not wanting to process a chicken!

Beekissed, i never judge anyone who kill chicken for food or goats or any other farm animals for that matter. I eat all of those: goat, lamb, pig (pork), ducks, chickens, cow (beef). I wish I was brave enough to stand a sight of blood. The thing is, I can't. Some people can't. I understand it is the circle of life, and nothing wrong with processing (a.k.a killing) for food. I will never be a vegan. I love Korean BBQ too much, I love peking duck too much. But doing it myself, I can't. Like I said, it's not only about people judging people who raise farm animals for food. There's a squeamish factor, like in my case. Again, just because I like eating meat, doesn't mean I have to do it myself. I'm not hypocrite, I'm just tired of fainting and getting dizzy at the sight of blood.

Bee is right. It's not like I go around being like "F YEAH I KILL CRITTERS". I don't even own a "people for the eating of tasty animals" shirt or a "breed the best eat the rest" shirt like some people I know. I don't walk around with a badge on my chest. I don't even have a "farmers make food" sticker in my window like a lot of folks I know.

But when you meet someone, they ask you things like "What do you do for a living?". I raise rabbits too, and they kick and bite (and I'm not very careful at all) and so my arms have animal scars on them that get some inquiries. I am covered in bunny fur a lot, and people ask "Oh! What animals do you own?". Most people know I keep chickens. The picture for the background on my phone is chickens and I have photos of my critters I have to scroll past to see something else if I wanna show a photo. I've had people ask me questions about the fact that my work boots (that I wear out in in climate weather) have dirt on them and why. Is it so inconceivable that someone might bring up a topic that could cause someone to find out what I do with my time? And when they do I'm not going to bold-faced lie about it. I'm proud of my work, and I have every right to be as proud of my work as anyone else.

And for that matter, yeah, every once in a while I say something about my work unprovoked. Most folks mention wok every once in a while. It does take up the majority of our week, after all. I'm never like "Oh man, I'm exhausted from slaughtering animals! You should have been there! I was processing a bird and I CHOPPED OFF THE HEAD the blood went EVERYWHERE and the trachea fell out the neck and it flipped out of it's cone and went flopping around the yard spreading blood and gore!". But I might be like "Sorry, I am super tired today. Processing was just kind of a mess and it stressed me out." Or I might be like "Look at the hide I just tanned from one of my rabbits! It's super soft and came out great!". These are not vegans I am speaking to. It should not be offensive that I kill animals to eat or use the hides.

To be fair, I also have blood issues. I'm not sure why. I can process rabbits without blinking an eye (very little blood, I suggest people try processing rabbits first and work their way up, tbh), my cycle does not disturb me and IVs don't bother me either. Chickens can get me a bit woozy on occasion. But blood coming out of a wound bothers me a lot. I think it has something to do with the rhythmic pulsing of blood leaving the body through heartbeat and blood pressure, because I nearly fainted the one time we tried to process a suckling pig by sticking it's throat... And I almost always fight not to pass out if I'm bleeding a significant amount, or someone else is. I haven't ever, and I'm going to have to get over it 'cause I wanna do cows some day. But it's a legitimate issue. Not everyone is so dedicated to the craft of Chickening that they choose to suck it up. But I think folks oughta at least try, or get close to the work, at least once.

I like to drive, but I do not want to fix, repair, or work on the car. I am grateful I can get someone else to do it. Same thing.

But don't you think it would a good thing to have a basic understanding of what's involved (and I'm not saying you do not- speaking generally, here- most people do not have a clue what is involved, and worse, do not care) ....... for many reasons, not the least of which are emergencies when a mechanic is not available, and to prevent an unscrupulous "mechanic" from telling you something like " the car needs new muffler bearings right now, or the dubilator will burn up." ?

I am not suggesting that you or anyone do all your own auto mechanic work, or all your own butchering, but that willful ignorance or emotional hangups that prevent someone from doing something that needs to be done are not good things.

Using the autocare analogy, I think that Bee is saying that folks condemn him because he a "greasemonkey" ......

Some folks just like doing that sort of thing and some don't. I learned to change a tire, change the oil, change the fuel filter and other minor repairs on the car because such things are easy to do and learn and can help me get through life easier. I rather like learning new things that will render me a more versatile, adaptable person...but many do not have that desire at all and there's no changing such things. You either do or you don't, will or you won't, but no sense in going around and around about it all.

I have no desire at all to "learn code", but I do enjoy using the computer when needed. I have, however, learned the basics of how to clean up the files, remove unwanted things, keep it running more smoothly...because it saves me money and makes my life easier. I have no doubt I could learn code if need be, but I don't use the computer enough in my life to even need that capability, so that's a nonissue.

When it comes down to the bottom of the bottom of things, folks will generally be who they want to be and do what they want to do, regardless of how others feel about it, so no need to get over anxious about such things. I like to be left alone about my choices in life, so I figure folks who don't want to kill a chicken feel the same way. Long as they keep their beaks out of my chicken killin' tendencies, I'm more than glad to keep my beak out of their reluctance to do the same.

Wow some real fire on this thread! Anyway my two cents is by raising and slaughtering your own animals you are at least giving them a good life and a quick death. And you are not supporting corporate meat houses which don't give a good life or a swift end. It's actually a real service to animals to raise and eat your own. I wish I could do more of it, for the chickens sake and the health of my family. That's what makes me happy when I kill and eat something, knowing that it really was the best option for the animals and myself.
