Composting

Are you going to make a composting bin or just a pile?

I used pallets, one for floor and then four sides. The front doesn't get screwed together it attaches with hook and loops so it can be removed to turn the pile and eventually dig it out.

If it's kept moist it will break down faster, till it every few weeks and don't add stove ashes as they impede composting and don't add meat. Add the ash after you remove it and you've got some great soil for your gardens.

Here is a pretty good thread on it on the Gardening Forum sister site. There are a couple of links in post#12 that are really good.

The basic idea is that stuff rots and becomes nutrition for the next round of plants. Composting is just a way to get it to rot in a place you can reuse it and maybe speed up the process.

You can make it as simple or as complicated as you wish.

There are a lot of people on this forum that can help a bunch. But it's easier to respond if there are more specific questions. You might read through that thread and follow a couple of links to help you get to know which questions to ask. I'll subscribe to this thread for a couple of days in case you have some specific questions. People have literally written books on the questions you asked and still not covered it all.

Very informative - thanks!!!

I'd rather do a bin. How did you make yours with the pallets?

Made a flat spot and put a pallet on ground, stood three sides up on floor, slates facing in, and screwed them together. Hard wood pallets require predrilling. Then put hooks on front pallet and eyes on the bin sides to hook the front panel. Super easy and if hard wood will last long time.

Egghead, do you have a photo. I think if the OP could see a visual they might see how easy it is.

This one is not as easy as the pallet one, but I had a lot of leftover brick. I made two bins, one for the stuff working and one to gather the stuff for the next batch.

This is the only partial picture I have of it. Not really showing much, front wall is off as I was tilling it up. Something I forgot to mention was I used metal brackets to attach the three upright pallets to one another. A basic flat metal with holes in it...see if I can find image of that too.

Yeah, told ya it doesn't show much, left of picture...if I remember I'll snap some close ups tomorrow.

Here is a cheap flat metal plate fastener, used 4 of them. Two on each side of back wall to connect side walls.
