Giant (mud?) balls on ends of toes?

Thank you all for the most valuable information. I'm new to having chickens. When I saw the ball at the end of my girls tallons, I thought, oh boy, what the heck is that. Only one of my girls has the mud balls. Now I know how to take care of it!!
Thank you all!!

Mine are like this too! I've posted a thread myself about it. But mine seem to manage it themselves? I wouldn't try to treat it until they get older though, because they seem to be managing at the moment. They get it, it goes away. They get it again. I'll see how they go when they're a big bigger (and maybe more careful!).

Maybe you all could try some deep litter in your coops and runs so that mud and feces is no longer such an issue? I've never seen or heard of such a thing before and I've been doing this a long, long time. I free range, so it's not ever been an issue here but if I were keeping in a pen and run, I'd definitely be doing a deep litter system that would eliminate the factor of too much mud and too much poop.
