Yeah my parents were shocked that I can't make money with peafowl when they first found that out.

What about PURE green peafowl though? Say if you had all three subspecies and all were pure and you sold the offspring? What if you turned your peafowl hobbie into an attraction and opened it to the public for a few days a week for an entrance fee?

Keeping peafowl is just something I do for fun but I was wondering just today what birds are the ones that bring in the money? I know red goldens can be very popular....

So why is it that peafowl don't bring you much money again? Is it because they are not in high demand, they take too long to mature, they are too big so require more space and a larger pen, etc?

I was just wondering...One thing is for sure whatever job I get when I am out of college it needs to be one that can support my peafowl adiction. I recently emailed Pinola Preserve and the curator of birds emailed me back answering my questions and the last thing he said was how he is always telling himself that he actually gets paid for having his hobbie as a job. I think that is just awesome. I have seen my dad have a job he hated that he had for years until he retired and my mom owns her own business but it is stressful. I want a job that I will enjoy because I have seen what it is like having one that doesn't make you happy.

Okay yeah I don't want to ever make profit the wrong way. I want to always correctly care for the birds and I don't see them as just walking dollar signs. I never got into it for the money anyways. The really big investment is the pens for sure! Well keeping peafowl is fun and it is nice to make a little money doing it so that you can say it is somewhat of a productive hobbie. It certainly makes my parents feel better when I make some money selling feathers or a bird instead of costing them more on pens and food.

MinxFox i am sure in the end your parents are very happy that you have such a love for your birds and not out causing trouble cause you are board or hanging with the wrong kinda folks

Haha well actually for years and years and years I did want a horse especially because my dad grew up having a few (he just didn't like it that he was always the one having to break the horses). When I got older I realized how much care horses require. All that poo you have to shovel and stuff...Plus my mom doesn't like how they can be dangerous. We know a guy who got his son a horse for Christmas and the guy got on the horse and it bucked him off and he was in the hospital and in a wheel chair for some time. My dad has told me how horses are going for cheep these days but the feed costs are terrible so some people just turn their horses loose. The place we go hunting at in Alabama has several horses that turned wild after being released or escaping from their home. They look better than most horses you see in people's yards. They are really slick but they are extremely spooky. They like to eat in the food plots.

I would say my parents are happy thought that I am learning a lot of things and responsiblity through raising peafowl. Our puppy really loves my hobbie. She loves to chew up peafowl feathers. They are her favorite chew toy.
