Alaska

Hi we're coming up next week to Anchorage. Any advice on what to see and do?

Also anyone know of a Pentecostal type church in Anchorage?

Is there difficulty in getting certain breeds up there?

Post 52538 on the New York Chicken lovers thread.

We have a debate about chickens in AK starving to death because of the light situation or lack thereof.

Care to set us straight?

they have a raspberry LIKE berry called a Cloud berry. REALLY great. Not sure if they would grow here or not
There was someone here selling jams and jellies of different kinds. They had pics of the different berries. Currants and gooseberries, Raspberries and strawberries. Blacks and another type. But some were new to me. The jams were expensive so I didn't buy any. Tasted a couple but not worth the money. Perhaps that's why folks don't pursue growing them. There was a whitish looking strawberry.

Nothing special in the veggie or produce sold at this market. Very disappointing. Commercial looking strawberries for about $7 a quart. Yikes!

Saw my first Black bear and her cubs yesterday. She was eating something but not sure what. I did not get out of the car of course, but got some good pics. She of course was not interested in us. Blacks I don't believe are as aggressive as Browns. She just went about her business. I can't understand why folks would feel the need to mess with them anyhow.

Of course if I was on foot, I'd been more cautious. Making noise letting them know you're about is helpful. We're on a military base and they've changed their running course due to bear sightings.

Does anyone here know how much Alaska berries differ from NY berries? Are there any wild or native berries that I could get and grow in NY?
Lots of berries here in Alaska. Not sure if any would grow in NY or the legality of transporting them. We pick raspberries wild and domestic. Blueberries. Crow berries. Salmonberries. Currants. Red and black. High bush cranberries. Lingonberries. Dew berries. Cloud berries. Watermelon berries. And probably a few more I forgot. Next month starts berry season here. Still too early right now. Morel season just ended. It was great! Fishing is picking up. If you see any large male black bears let me know where. I'm hungry for some bear sausage!!

I'll have to check them out. Some we have of course, but things like Crow berries, Dew berries, Cloud berries and Watermelon berries I'm not familiar with.

We leave today for NY but I'm not sure you'd want to hunt near here. We did hear that a Moose had her babies in the Loews parking lot. Sorry we missed it. I carry my camera with me all the time.
