Hi, I am just getting started with some baby chicks. I have read all of the helpful information but I am still a little unsure of a few things. 1. What can you keep your baby chicks in? 2. How do you adjust the temp week to week?
Thanks!!!

I brood my chicks in a plastic tote with the top cut out and covered with hardware fabric, keeps the cat out. I control the temperature by raising and lowering the lamp and changing the bulbs. The longer they are in the brooder the lower the bulb wattage and then I turn off the lamp for a few hours and then back on for a few hours, Then they go to the grow out coop.

You can use cardboard boxes, plastic totes, a bathtub. Anyting big enough for them as they grow so fast. You can also change them to larger areas as they grow also. For the light it depends on where you will be keeping them. I have some in my master bath tub and use the shower curtain rod to hold the light. You want to make sure that the light is super secure so it doesnt fall on the tiny chicks. So do not use the handy dandy metal clip slide the pole thru the metal. The one in my living room is secured with rope to a plant hook in my celing. I set the temp according to how the chicks act. I let it set in one position for an hour and see if they spread out with their wings out and panting they are hot and if they huddle tightly under the light chirping loudly then they are cold and I raise/lower slightly and go from their. You raise or lower it to reduce or add heat for them.

Thank you for your reply. Our baby chicks are doing good in their rubbermaid tote!!
