Not sure if there's a link buried in here for homesteaders but I figured I'd start this one to talk with some of you guys.

We are new to homesteading. We've always had veggie gardens but never on the scale we are undertaking now. It will be about 3/4 or 2/3 of an acre (haven't measured it out yet) in addition to beds all over our property (2 acres total). We are going to have two ducks and 10 chickens total. We were going to get goats but would rather wait until we are fully on a farm setting before that undertaking.

There are three of us (me, DH, and DS who is 2) with a dog, a cat, 5 chicks and two ducks at this point.

We are wanting to be more self sufficient, eliminate our debt, and save money to buy a small farm (farmette as I call it!) I'm getting into canning, I've been knitting/crocheting for years now, and we both work outside the home.

Anyone else into this kind of life? I'd love to eventually have one of leave work and be fulltime on this project!!!

I am a homestead wanna be. I plant a large garden grind flour and bake bread. I hang my cloths on the line (weather permitting) I just received 43 chicks for meat and eggs. I want to be free of chemicals the factories try to feed us! My reason is health, for my husband, myself, family and for the animals to be raised humanely.I also work full time as a package car driver. I am currently home due to a broken leg. (horse fell on me) I think that it is great you are doing what you are doing!! Being close to the earth is so healthy in so many ways!! Hope to talk to you again

Ah sorry about the leg! I want to grind our cornmeal but can't find a grinder that's not outrageous. I'd like to find a good clean used one!

Hello everyone! I have a nutrimill grain mill. It works really great and it is fast!! You can google nutrimill grain mill and it will come up. I have been grinding flour and baking bread for several years now. I combine white wheat and red wheat to get what I use as wheat flour. I also really like kamut grain it is one of my favorites! Kamut has a kind of buttery taste. I use 1/2 of my wheat flour with 1/2 kamut to make the greatest rolls! yummm! Warm with butter!!! It is reallly fun to bake from scratch!

We have 10 acres - almost 11 - but we live in the High Mountain Desert, elevation 7400+ so gardening is a challenge. I am working on it though. Got lots of spinach last year and an overabundance of tomatoes the year before.
Last fall our neighbor, who is getting into prepping, scored a great deal on red wheat and bought a bunch for us when he went to pick it up. Turns out he got too much for himself, so we got some extra also. So we have buckets of wheat in the stage area. We purchased a grain mill package last year and I have been grinding wheat for bread quite a bit. I always did make homemade bread on occasion, it is just so much better when you have fresh whole wheat flour to bake with. Our grain mill came set-up with the motor for running it, but we can disconnect the motor, add the handle and grind away if we want.
I also started canning last fall. Lots of apple pie filling on the shelves, along with jams and jellies. But we are almost out of canned chicken breast, apple sauce, peaches and pears. I guess it will take some time to figure out what we eat.

It must be beautiful where you live!! We have only three acres but I do what I can with that! There are some black raspberries out back I told my husband if you pick them I will can jam with them. That was a done deal!! I do not have a pressure cooker so I have not yet canned any meat. I would like to try it though! I need to know how to ''pickle'' an egg. I have never had one that way but would like to try.
