Correct heat? Chirping!!

We just got six baby chicks yesterday from tractor supply. They chirp quietly for the most part but there is one that will randomly chirp extremely loud for a little while and then stop. Is he unhappy or maybe just a loud mouth? I read some other posts that said this can be because they are cold but we have a heat lamp at the top of their container, maybe 24" max from them, and they sometimes go in the box we were told to put in there to escape the heat so it doesn't seem like they're cold.. So I guess my question is could this one chick be an alert that something is wrong or just extra noisy? We're totally new to this so any help is appreciated, thanks!
 
If they have a heat lamp set up at 24'' higher than them they should be alright. If you are really concerned they may be too cold put a thermometer in there to check. It sounds like perfectly normal behavior from young chicks though. They probably will sleep alot the first few days near the heat source.
 
Have you checked for pasty butt? Chicks with some digestive distress tend to make a lot of noise.

For an all-around boost, give them some natural yogurt with feed sprinkled on top.

You can also add unfiltered apple cider vinegar to their water for some immune and digestive support.

The loud one could benefit from some poly-vi-sol (without Iron) and it might give him that bit extra he needs to get over whatever is making him uncomfortable.

I had a noisy one-- even woke me up at night! It sounded like a distress cry but nothing was wrong. I finally started carrying her around with me-- seemed like attention seemed to fix it. I did that for a day and she got over it. She's still my friendliest one, though. :)
 
I have one pheasant chick out of 15 that would chirp loud till i would go in to the brooder and talk to it and tell it to go to sleep and it would lay down and sleep not another peep.
 
Haha that's funny! This may be a silly newbie thing to think but we were thinking maybe it was a rooster (our chicks weren't sexed) since he/she was so noisy!
 
lol haven't heard that one. I'm sure it could be a mama's chic lol . Try talking to it or if he persists try the yogurt in case it does have a belly ache.
 
If the chicks are cold they will all be huddled under the lamp standing up. If they are comfy they will fall asleep all over the place face down in the shavings. Mine sleep with their heads in the feeder more often than not. Lol. It's 70 in my house, and the heat lamps probably make it too hot...I have been keeping the lamps raised way up so as to not cook the little darlings...Heck. I moved some Pekin ducks outside today. It's probably 40 outside, but 94 under the lamp that is 2 feet above...so I would assume that they aren't too cold...depending on the wattage of your bulb. I have a white 250w that will easily keep the chicks nice and warm, even outside. Which is good.
