What you need to know about Vultures(evil things!)

Hello every one. Not to long ago my family and I made a discovery that blew our minds. We were having chickens dissapear almost daily and could not figure out how. We at first thought a hawk but the only birds around were vultures and the symptoms did not fit. There were no shredded feathers or anything. I had an eyewitness see a coopers hawk eat a chicken the other day so I know what it looks like. The vultures would circle our coop lower and lower every day and finally we looked it up.Yup sure enough if it's bad enough on them, vultures will hunt and kill live prey. We no longer say,'' False alarm it's just a vulture!'' I guess times are hard on the birds with warm winter down here and all!
 
If vultures or especially buzzards think something looks easy to catch and eat they surely will catch and eat it. Not just dead things...Anything small that they think they can catch they will
 
They were the only thing that could have gotten them! There was no body but later I would find feathers and bones under tall trees covered in...you guessed it...Vulture poo!

It was difficult for me to believe at first!
 
A lot of things aren't big enough to carry a chicken off but can still kill it. Included in that group are many owls and acipiter type hawks. They'll kill and eat what they can and leave the rest. That can be when the vulture arrives.
I'm not saying it doesn't/didn't happen, I'd just like visual confirmation.
That said, whenever something is hungry enough it will certainly venture out of it's comfort zone.
 
Yeah but that's what I'm saying. There was no body in the fence. There was no body anywhere(and you better believe I looked pretty dang good!) except in the vulture scat! We have a LOT of vultures around and I have taken to studying there way's. I will have to try to get one stalking my pet duck when I take her for walks on video for you.
 
Black vultrues are more aggressive than turkey vultures and have been known to attack living prey... usually newborn animals before they can walk or stand. It could be that they see them as weak or injured. You could probably find some info if you googled it. I guess chicks could be seen as an easy meal, too. I would not rule vultures out as a suspect.

Vultures will not make chickens dissappear, even when more predatory black vultures are involved. Somebody else is getting your birds. Vultures are simply riding thermals centered on area you keep chickens.
