We have 6 little pullets, Im not quite sure how old they are but we got three of them a few days before christmas and 3 a few days after, and they were being sold as "day olds" but I think they were probably a bit older.
If some breeds start laying at different ages, Ill just tell you the breeds just in case any of you may know how long it takes for a specific breed to begin to lay. We have 1 rhode isalnd red, 1 barred rock, 2 buff orpingtons, and 2 easter eggers.
We also recently purchased an adult silkie at a pet store about 3 or 4 weeks ago. I am not quite so sure how old she is, but she looks full grown to me. I know they arent layer breeds but I read somewhere they could lay eggs weekly, but we have had her for about a month now and she hasnt laid any eggs yet? Could she be younger then I think she is? Or could something be wrong? We dont have nest boxes in the coop yet, because we tried to put one in but the chickens all just perch on the side of it instead of their roosts and poop in it while the silkie is trying to sleep in it. Could this be why she isnt laying because she is stressed out about all the chickens perching on the box? We are using cat litter pans as nests, I heard you could use them as nests and that it would be easy to clean out. Is this a good idea or should I switch to something else as a nest?
(If any of you have any ideas on what to make the nest out of, let me know! (: )
Here is a picture of the silkie. Maybe you guys could guess how old she is.
(Yes I am aware she is a cross breed since she doesnt have feathers on her feet)
