Update on our duck adventure - we now currently have 5 Mallard Drakes, 1 Mallard Hen, 1 Male (black) Peeking Duck, 1- Female (white) peeking duck and for the past month have had over 20 male/female wood ducks every morning/evening...our pond has been busy...WOW, this has been an amazing sight watching the wood ducks come and go. I should mention, we have 5 wood duck boxes - 2 boxes have produced around 25 hatchlings (we were fortunate enough to be home and watch them, one by one, drop out and follow their mommas off to another pond or wherever she took them). Wish they would have stayed, but nature is uncontrollable. Afterwards, we checked the boxes and found 9 eggs in one box, 5 in the other. Waited to see if any females would return, but they didn't. So, we placed the eggs in an incubator...to our surprise, 5 hatched. 1 hatchling didn't make it, but the other 4 are doing good. 2 more boxes have female wood ducks inside constantly, fingers crossed for more hatchlings soon. As for the Mallards, we noticed the hen making a nest, a week later she has 5 eggs.
Oh my....for first timers, this is exciting and frightening at the same time. Each new day produces something new and exciting!
