"Quail Thread-Hatching, Mutations, and everything quail related!!!"

What did you put in there for them? Is that DE or Sand? Can you just use Play Sand?

Quail are my "starter poultry", and I am learning with them on small scale before ramping up to bigger birds. Please excuse the dumb questions.

There is no such thing as a dumb questio only some that dont make sense so fire away!

I just have dirt from our yard in the dust bath for my quail. We live in a sandy area so it works well.

Chinchilla dust bath is typically volcanic ash (or used to be years ago) & would likely work well. I may look into buying a bag at the feed store, just to make it easy to refill the dust bath.

I don't put DE in my dust bath as it shouldn't be inhaled. I figure probably not great for the poultry either to inhale either. I do sometime feed it (wet) to my poultry and will sprinkle some in a broody's nest or sprinkle on the skin/feathers of any that seem to need it.

Glad you enjoyed it Serama Hen! (I have 3 Seramas too.)

Hi guys,

Not sure if this question has been asked as this is a very healthy and busy thread with 10 pages so I apologise if some of you will be repeating yourselves.
I have a sand dust bath that I have added "poultry dust" too.
http://store.cityfarmers.com.au/david-grays-poultry-dust-400g.html as it is a form of medication is it ok to always use it as part of the sand mix? Could prolonged use damage/burn their skin?

Thank you
Regards
Mazzi

Here is video of my coturnix quail dust bathing.

(I didn't video it sideways don't know why it got turned! Guess I'll have to remember this when taking videos with my cell phone.)

I have found that if my quail start really throwing their food out of the food bowl that they want to dust bath.

Love it! How often does the dust bath get ch anged out? My pen is officially built and we are moving them in today :)

Thanks QT. I usually give them the dust bath about once a week for 10 minutes to an hour. Typically they don't poop in the dust bath if I don't leave it in too long. If I leave it too long I just clean the poop out & add more dirt/dust when it's getting low. They shed a ton of fine dirt after dust bathing. Sometimes I'll put a clean sheet of newspaper under them when they dust bath & dump the dust back into their dust bath container after they shake the bulk of it off when they're done.
