Proper word usage appears to be on the decline in our society. I get so frustrated trying to decipher people's typings. So I give myself permission to quit trying! I can skip posts/threads/anything in which people are unable to be coherant.

I couldn't agree with you more! Punctuation is extinct. Grammar and spelling are appalling. It's so difficult to read posts in which no care has gone into the message that, like you, I just won't read them anymore.

One thing that I hate being called is a Grammar Nazi. But I am a stickler on spelling, usage and yes, grammar.

How about phrases like
It's there right.
Their going to the mall.

Apostrophe abuse is something I absolutely cannot abide. Here's something you'll love: I know someone whose last name is Fields. I got a change of address card from her the other day and it boldly announced that "The Field's Family Has Moved!" When people can't even spell their own names, you know this country is in trouble...

I now what your sayin' LOL.

There is a truly a dumbing(which isn't a word) down of America. While I believe it is more than just one factor. Social media plays a very big factor in all of it. My kids constantly give me crap because when I text I spell out every word and I am way to slow. One word I hate to see spelled creatively is "today",the "2day" thing just gets my underwear in a bunch. I guess it stems from the early texters when they companies charged by the character.

But what really gets my feathers up is when professional media outlets use poor grammar or misspell words or proper or correct use of them. There is a regional paper around here that is either edited in a third world country or by a third grader, not sure which. They constantly use poor grammar or wrong word use. So glad I only read it online because it would not be worth paying for it.

Our local paper is the same. It is sometimes painful to read. The commenters spend more time critiquing the spelling and grammar than they spend commenting on the story.

Often the case here too. There may be 20 comments on the story and a least half of them make reference to poor grammar and the like as well as the story.

hehehehe My Dad uses the local paper as a giant word puzzle. He can kill an afternoon searching for every single missed comma or extra apostrophe.

Yes, but here's the thing: I hear and read more complaints from people who feel that grammar, spelling, and improper use of the language should NOT be criticized, but why shouldn't it?? Why should we allow errors and laziness? People SHOULD be called out on it and in some cases, they should be made to correct their errors. The problem will only get worse if we continue to allow it to occur. I point my kids' errors out to them every time I find them and I encourage them to figure out the correction on their own. When they do, they are praised with a smooch on their smart little beans.

Duckinnut, in your second paragraph, there is a very common spelling error. If you meant it to be there to make a point (such as you did in your first paragraph), then okay, point taken. If not, well then, I've called you out on it and I mean it in the gentlest and kindest of ways and I hope you don't get defensive. I'm only practicing what I preach.

Calling out a business, especially for a service you pay for (ie. a paper), is different from bemoaning spelling/grammar errors on places like chicken forums. It is vastly different from correcting statements made about chickens and their care that are misleading or even dangerously incorrect. Honestly, reading people's spelling/grammar corrections on a forum like this are far more annoying to me than the actual mistake/error could ever hope to be. This is especially true when the person doing the correcting has errors within his or her own writing. Associating spelling/grammar errors with laziness or stupidity leaves a particularly unpleasant taste in my mouth.

Of course, people are free to do all of the above. Others are free to quirk a brow in return, or to view such corrections in a less than positive light.

One thing that would be nice to see is a thread that offers helpful grammar lessons and patient guidance for those asking for such guidance within the thread.
