I have hatched a batch of 17 silkie chicks. One of them is holding its head slightly twisted to the right. It seems healthy in every other way and is eating and drinking fine. Does anyone know what this is and if i can do anything to help it?

I honestly have no clue! Have never dealt with that. Perhaps it is just getting used to the outside and will straighten up in a few days? Also, could be an eye problem, I have heard of animals holding their heads a certain way because otherwise they couldn't see as well.

I think you give them poly vi sol for that, like a drop or two a day. I think they are missing some vitamin. I'm sure one of the really really old members will spot this and clarify my treatment.

I don't know. I have a duck who has a crooked neck and he's still doing fine a year later. He doesn't keep himself quite a clean as my other Pekin, and my Cayuga duck hen won't allow him to mount her, (she's the only female duck from that group of water birds, and I swear the ducks and geese all think they are siblings) so I won't have to worry about genetics coming through the next generation. Keep an eye on the baby and maybe someone will have better advice, but your baby might be fine.

I also think it's a vitamin defiecency but can't remember which one. The poly vi sol is good advice. I had one that just got worse and worse(before I knew about what caused it)and I had to put the poor baby down. Good luck with yours.

i had i duck that hatched it was shipped it had a bad neck and died 5 weeks later

I have one- but it twisted to the left- poly vi sol 3 drops daily for a week plus 1 drop of vit E from a capsule.Mine has straightened out!!! eating well and if she hadn't gone swimming in the water dish would be better. She /he is still alive but the getting wet and cold was a set back

I had a Silkie with the crooked neck also and AussieSharon fixed it right up by squirting one Vitamin E capsule twice a day into the chicks beak. Dr. Peter Brown (better known as the chicken doctor) also told me that is the way to straighten their necks out. He said that Silkies are fragile chicks and it is very normal for them to be born with a Vitamin E deficiency, which causes the crooked neck. So, 1 Vitamin E capsule twice daily until the problem is corrected. I did mine for approx. 3 wks.

I had one start that about 4 days ago and i gave him some Sublingual B12 and minerals that you can get in the Vit section at WalMart. It has a dropper in it. It is for humans. I give about 1 dropper full daily. He is much better You need to give it for about 2 weeks.

I have had that happen with Button Quail, and the good news is that within a day or two she straightened right up. Her neck was totally turned and so was her back, so she was crablike! I put her in a special brooder with a curled toe quail, as the others were pecking them both, and expected her to die overnight. Next day she was fine, and pecking on the curled toe quail!

And the curled toe quail also straightened up after about 5 days.
I hope yours does as well.
