Chick bloody toe - pecking by others

"Thanks, BYC friends! You were right. We were B.O.R.E.D. and it was making us act B.A.D. Mom took us Bossy Barreds out for some fresh air this afternoon and it was just what we needed! The rest of the family came along, too. After we played and played we came back inside and fell fast asleep."

Yes, might have one cockerel!

The lighter guy in the top photo, with brighter yellow beak is looking like a male. Are his legs brighter too?
Is that the same bird in the lower photo? It's not so obvious in the bottom, so you might get lucky.

Well, here is what happened.

After keeping the two groups separated, I finally reunited everyone into the completed coop when the hurt toe looked fairly healed up. For nearly five days the girls got along perfectly. Not a single problem.

Yesterday it rained really hard and there was a sudden temperature drop. When I went home to check on the girls in the afternoon, I found blood splattered all over the coop and the toe was pecked off AGAIN.

I put the hurt chick (they are about 6-7 wks now) in a carrier cage inside the coop shelter and treated her wound.

My final solution???

GIVING THE **** BARRED ROCKS AWAY!!!!!

I'm dropping them off with someone who answered my posting on Craiglist for free chickens.

Will never buy chicks from a feed store again no matter how nice the staff is. Only ordering from trusted breeders.

I don't blame you.

Did you ever get the Blukote as recommended? It's definitely something to have on-hand. They'll decimate each other, as mentioned above, if the "attraction" isn't removed. Blukote works wonders.

I hope everyone now gets along and heals up nicely. :)

You know, it's funny, since you originally posted this, my Barred Rock has been a snot. She has started harassing my Light Brahma, and she's the only older hen that will actively chase and harass my younger bunch. I listed her on Craigslist for $10, and got several replies of people that want her for free. Sorry, I'm not giving away a 12-month old laying hen! She'd have to be ripping feathers out and such--not just being annoying.

I've got an assorted bunch of chicks in my brooder now. There are three "barred" chicks. I'm not sure if they're Barred Rocks, Cuckoo Marans or what yet. I actually suspect CM, since the males have pink beaks, but it's still early. Keeping my fingers crossed!

However, I wouldn't completely write off feed stores and their hatchery chicks--MOST of my birds from feed stores usually turn out perfectly nice.

How did you resolve this problem? I am having the same issues. Mine are about 21/2 months old. I think I have 7 roosters and 4 hens. I definitely want to get rid of some roosters, but don't know how to, or who will take them. I tried this site, and just posted free chickens on craigslist. I have a sweet little hen with a bad toe. She is separated, but even then the rest of the flock starts to go crazy just knowing she's there chirping and hurt. I have all these rooster sparing off with each other and the hens are all stressed out. If I put her back with them they peck her incessantly.

Anytime a chick or chicken has an owie you must put something like Blue Kote or similar on it. I use a product that is thick like pine tar and is also blue. When my silkie chick had somehow gotten a blood feather broken/picked on her foot, I had the same issue. I brought her inside, cleaned it, let it dry, put the product on, then turned her loose and all was well. All of my chicks were from a feed store and at nearly nine weeks, all is well. And, sometimes you get a chick who is annoying or mean or ... Most people give away the chicks that cause chaos in the flock. When they are cooped up, especially, it is important that things are peaceful. Gotta do what you've gotta do!

I have been putting the bluekote on, but what is the name of the other product you mentioned? The tar like stuff. I went Farm and Family and they don't know what I'm talking about. She's not bleeding anymore, but still holds her foot up most of the time. There's hardly any nail on that toe. I can't see a cut or injury and can't really tell what the problem is. The bluekote also makes it harder to tell what's going on. Could she have some kind of ingrown toenail? It doesn't look like the pictures of Bumblefoot, but I don't want to get to that point. I'm nervous about cutting at her toe, but should I try to cut around the nail area?

Toe pecking in baby chicks is normally initiated by hunger.some farmers delay introduction of feeding the mistaken belief that delayed feeding fastens the resumption of nutrients from the yolk sac infection.sometimes the feeders may be too high or too far away from the heat source far the chicks to get at feed.if chicks cannot find feed, they start to pick at their own toes or those of nearby chicks.
