I'm sorry you're going through this crisis. Go ahead and give her the amoxicillin as recommended. Hopefully someone with a better knowledge of infections in ducks will chime in soon. But for now, go with what the vet said. It's the best bet for your duck at this point.

I had the same problem with one of my girls last year.

I got advice from an online vet (found through this site) because like you there are no duck vets here (rural sw France!). The advice was as follows:-

Do you think there is any shell left in her? If yes, you should help her pass it, but be careful as it may cut her.

Wearing surgical gloves and using a lubricant like KY or similar you should check her vent. Get somebody to hold her bottom up - do not turn her upside down as this might distress her.

Once sure you have removed all the egg shell you will need to give her a flush - sorry can't remember what I used (seem to recall Liquid Sulphur but can't be sure - hopefully someone else will be more specific).

Then give her the antibiotics for seven days and discard any eggs for the next month.

My girl is happy and healthy and one of my best layers so hope this helps - good luck.

yes, seen on xray pieces of shell.not big and she is passing a piece in each stool. going on our 4th dose of meds and got her to eat worms, a dozen or more and alot of watermelon..we pray she pulls thru she is our first.thank you for sharing gives me hope

I'm sorry you are going through , but I hope the little gal makes it okay! I would think if she is passing some of the shell then that is a good sign.

She will pass the shell naturally as the pieces aren't too big - glad shes eating treats - make sure she is drinking lots too - good luck and keep us posted.

How is your duck?

The infection would concern me certainly. I'd do warm bath, isolate her in a dark area, supplement with ACV, vitamins, calcium gluc. Hopefully Amiga JW and Miss Lydia will be on, they have much more experience than me.

praying for you both, I feel you have gotten good advice here. We have not had this particular problem so far, and it is frightening.

Keep her on the amoxicillin for the time the vet recommends, and be aware that infections can be very sneaky with ducks. Watch closely to see any signs she may need more help. I am thinking if she's listless, if her appetite drops, that kind of thing.

Keeping her immune system built up is half the battle. Sounds like you are doing the best anyone can in this situation.

Just wanted to add and reiterate what HollyDuckFarmer mentioned above. A warm bath can be very helpful for ailing waterfowl. It keeps their body temperature up (not a hot bath, just lukewarm), increases blood circulation, helps them relax - very important for your girl right now - gives you an opportunity to watch and notice details about breathing, movement, odor, slight bleeding, etc. And they like water, ya know
