Hello my name is Ben from Riverview New Brunswick. I'm happy I found this website because I have many questions about starting out with chickens. I've been experiencing some issues with getting information from the town on whether or not I can raise chickens in my backyard. I finally got ahold of a urban planner and he said that the Town of Riverview is having their meeting this upcoming monday on the new Municipal Plan. The new plan is set to be up online the following tuesday at noon. The planner said I need to look to see if there is anything on there with regards to urban agriculture. If there is nothing than I am to send him a write up stating we need more info on that subject and that we should have a trial for backyard chickens. My challenge now is to gather info on the benefits of having backyard chickens and the possible issues that may arise with neighbours if any. Also I need ways to stop these issues from occuring.
So basically I'm looking for some input on the benefits of backyard chickens and ways to eliminate issues from occuring with neighbours. Any help would be greatly appreciated and hopefully we can resolve this issue so many more people in this town can have chickens.

Benefits
-ethical, healthier eggs
-social positive for handicap children (seems autistic and other developmentally delayed kids seem to get some therapeutic benefits from raising chickens) there are some threads around on this...
-Promotes self sufficiency and can help less fortunate families sustain themselves.

Suggested limitations
Colorado Springs limits to ten hens with 4 square feet of coop space required for each hen over 6 months of age. This I consider reasonable and helps prevent hoarding or standard of care issues. No roosters allowed; this is probably the biggest one to avoid annoying the neighbors.
some cities require that the coop be a certain distance from neighboring living structures.
Something should probably be said for storage of feed (storing in a way to help deter vermin).

good luck!
