The tied part only comes into play when they're at the end of the tie...as far as within their range, I'd imagine between their shelter and the fact that even non-game cock birds can be more than enough to take care of themselves they can take care of themselves pretty well. I'd also imagine that the flock owner responds very well to calls of alarm from his birds.
