when can chicks start to fly?

In about a week, they can be a jumpin', and flying out of the brooder by 2 weeks! Make preparations by the end of one week. :)

My first batch made a mess all over brand new carpet before I snatched out the window screen and threw it atop the brooder box. Yhen spent an hour with baby wipes moving furniture and picking up the little piles. I learned my lesson.

I have one that is 30 days old today and can straight-line-it across the living room. It's hatch mate flaps but luckily can't get airborn yet... yet.

I have one that is 12 days old, and it flaps it's wings while running and jumping at a height of around 6 or 7 inches. Not so sure it is flying, really, but more like jumping while flapping its wings. The real excitement occurs when it sees the dried blood-worm bits added to the food dish.

One of my coturnix flew out of the brooder and nearly made it out of the window, but fell behind the couch instead. It was 2 weeks old. The beooder was about 2m from the window. At 10 days they were all jumping and trying to fly, bouncing off the net on the top of the brooder and falling back.

I will be away tomorrow ......maybe I will wait til Monday and if it is decent weather I will leave the coop open and see if she takes them out. I'm more concerned with them getting back up the ramp. Thnx for your help. These chicks are so cute.
