I have been wondering how you people find businesses giving away wood pallets! I have searched craigslist...

If you could ride around for a few hours in the right place. You can find pallets. Construction site, behind shopping malls, industrial areas.

Yep. Hop in the truck, and take a ride through the local industrial park, factories, furniture businesses, appliance centers, Lowes, Home Depot, etc. But don't just drive by. Stop, walk inside, and inquire. Where I work, we keep the pallets hidden around back to keep people from just picking through the stack and making a mess by leaving pallets strewn everywhere. If you do pick and choose (perfectly acceptable, by the way), just use good etiquette and re-stack any pallets you don't want. The business will then welcome you back any time. If you want all of them, some businesses will happily help you load them with a forklift. This is the norm where I work. Saves lots of time for you.

I have a few home depots nearby, and a few Lowe's'. I also drove by a chemical company of some sort and seen probably a hundred pallets. Should I ask them? Did you just walk up to the clerk and ask if they had and leftover pallets they would be willing to give away?

If you live near a Food Bank they have hundreds of pallets. I've gotten some with no problem. Be sure to ask!

I work at a factory. We have so many pallets we have to pay somebody to haul them away. I would ask any buisness with them outside. You might be saving them some money. Just dont take them, ask first. We have pallets that are used for shipping specific products that we have to purchase. Hope this helps.

Lawn mower and tractor stores are good places to find nice pallets. I found three large pallets recently at a lawn mower store. They were glad for me to have them. They contained nice 2X3's which I used for the roof of a coop I am building.

Go to any large company, such as home depot, Lowe's,walmart, Kroger or tractor supply. If you go to the front desk and ask, I'm sure they would be happy to give you some. Also, look into any large construction sites, especially the ones doing tile, wood, or roofing. That stuff is heavy, and the pallets used are very good quality wood. I have gotten some made out of mahogany! All those pallets are going to the dumpster any way, so just stop by and ask if you can take them. ALWAYS ASK. I you don't ask, it's stealing, if you do ask, you're doing that person/ company a favor. Good luck!

If you are using the pallets for a DIY project - Don't take pallets from a chemical company - they were used to deliver stuff to a - CHEMICAL COMPANY - you don;t know the product that was shipped on it or if there was leakage. Make sure the Stamp has IPPC HT not IPPC MB.

  • "The IPPC Logo: if you don’t see it, don’t use it ! Even if a pallet may be perfectly safe without this logo it could also mean that it was treated with chemicals !
  • The treatment code : HT =Heat treatment / MB =Methyl Bromide / DB = Debarked"
