Ostrich Eggs

My grandson had a question & I don't have the answer. How often do ostrich lay & do they sit on a clutch? My grandson & I were watching a show yesterday where they said that one ostrich egg equals two dozen chicken eggs. My grandson asked "Do ostrich lay like our girls?" I know I can always get the answers here. Thanks

I have blue/black crosses, so their output is much better than just blacks or reds. Before their molt, my girls will put out as many as 1 egg every other day sometimes every 3rd day. Usually there are 2 - 3 hens 'attached' to a nest. I've seen three pile in at one time which is kind of neat :) The boys will typically NOT try to brood until there are 4 to 6 eggs in the nest. Now we used to just let them sit out there until we had 6 - 8 eggs and the temps were milder. Now what we do is pick up all eggs once per day so that we aren't too disruptive. Whatever is there goes straight into an incubator and viola! During the molt, their egg production dips dramatically for a few weeks where we might only see an egg every 4 - 5 days for a couple of weeks per hen. But when the molt is over, they go right back to dropping them like they can't stop them :)

Anyway, 4 to 6 eggs will get my roosters broody... usually :)

Right and that's the other thing. The boys brood the eggs, not the girls. The hen lays it, the rooster stays with it. :D

Anything else you want to know, feel free to ask... someone will help you out. Emu and Ostrich owners are the best! We love our birds that's for sure!

I'll post some baby pics of our newborn runs soon. We have a few dozen out there at the moment. 3 more came out so far today. Love the babies :) Our juvie pastures are filling up quickly this year as well. We rotate them out of the 'kindergarten' at 60 days. Definitely hated the slow start our season got, but I'm LOVING how it's turning out this year. Pretty amazing!

Hey I was wondering as to where you bought your ostrich eggs? I am wanting to do the same thing but have no idea where to start.

My flock was started with 6 month old chicks and a few older roosters. We have both fertile ostrich hatching eggs and newborn chicks available now. Send me a private message for more info :)
