Hi all! We're new to this site and soon to be new to Richmond, IN. We're moving there and we'd love to be able to take our three girls (read: chickens) and continue with our backyard egg operation. We love having chickens. How do we find out about local ordinances? We'll be smack in the middle of a neighborhood, so our chickens will be visible to every neighbor and I want to do this right. We've done some research and can't find a shred of info. Help? Thanks!

Go to your local city council. They will know whether or not fowl are allowed in your new location. I know that chickens are allowed in Indianapolis as that is where I am. You will also want to contact the home owners association if any for your neighborhood. Some groups won't allow chickens, some will allow hens but not roosters. My HOA doesn't allow anything that is considered barnyard including birds, pigs etc. but I have always been a rebel. Plus I only have one neighbor and she is great about it cause she benefits from the eggs. Look into it prior to moving as your neighbors might not be so forgiving.
