Hoping to start a new active thread for all of us who are raising quail in Arizona. We can discuss all things quail--hatching, breeding, raising, etc.

Let's make this the best quail thread on BYC.

Hi I was wondering if you have any tips on taking care of an orphened baby quail. My friend found him last night, and he is eating all right. We did try to find his parents but we could not. Do you have any tips for us on how to take care of him? Thanks.

You should contact a wildlife rehab center so that he can be cared for properly. How old is he do you think? Make sure to keep him warm under a brooding lamp, and if he is really tiny, you will need to start the heat in the 90's in the brooder. Don't feed him any chicken layer feed. If you have any chicken starter feed, that would work until you can get gamebird food. Make sure he can't drown in the water font. Small baby quail have a bad habit of falling in.

You might also put a small stuffed animal in the corner for him to snuggle up with or even a feather duster propped in the corner with the feathers down so he can snuggle into the feathers like he would his momma. Put a little mirror at his height on the floor as well so he thinks he is not alone.

Good luck with this baby.

I don't want to sound like a "downer", but I try to avoid "continuous" threads.... when they get 10+ pages long, it makes it difficult to do searches for something specific, and it also makes it difficult to assist somebody that has specific issues.
Some of the best threads I've seen on this forum and short and to the point. Hey, you don't have chickens, do you?
By the way, I do like the "Iced Tea" from Arizona.
Good luck

Subscribing because one day I will start the "quail" adventure... For now I'm good with 8 chickens and 2 ducks.

James the Bald: I understand. It can become overwhelming. I'm just starting my backyard poultry adventure. I have some quail eggs in the bator, nearing hatch day in about a week. I don't have any chickens yet. But, I'm growing fond of the Serama breed that I have been researching. I don't know how long I can hold out from getting some Serama eggs to hatch and raise quail and Seramas. :)

Jordi15: What do you like most about raising chickens? Any problems with neighbors or those around you?

I'm in Maricopa and raise chickens (currently have 15 hens, 1 roo, three 4-wk old babies and one 1-wk old baby). My friend lives in Phx and just went "quail shopping" yesterday. She came home with 6 quail. This is her first venture in poultry. I haven't seen her quail yet, but in helping direct her to this site, etc. I have become intrigued by learning more about raising quail. Even though others don't like a "long thread" I feel it is especially important for Arizonans to have a place to discuss raising any animal specifically in Arizona. With our extreme heat and dry air we have to do things completely different from the rest of the country. For example, my chicken coop is 3-sided. If it were 4-sided the heat inside would roast the chickens! Keeping birds cool in 115 degrees is different than keeping them cool in 80 or 90 degrees. I hope to see more from you and other Arizonans!

We raise ours for eggs and meat... But they are also a lot of fun to watch and my kids love raising the babies. Our neighbors are mostly family so they don't care! But we are selling our house so when we move I hope our neighbors are nice about chickens. That worries me a lot!

Menmyrc: Have you had any issues raising chickens here in Maricopa? I would love to start raising some chickens along with quail but I don't want to get that dreaded knock on the door by code compliance. For me, raising quail and chickens would be for pets and eggs, only.
