We free ranged our birds, and lost one here and there over the last year, but felt that was acceptable. However this spring, a family of at least five hawks moved in and we lost five birds in two weeks!

We penned in our girls hoping the hawks would eventually move on so we can free range again next year - haven't lost any since.

Then my blue orpington went broody, and we decided to see what would happen...today I found this when I checked on my girl:

There are five!!! Great job Cecilia! :) :) :)

We are planning on putting some baby chick food and a small chick waterer in the coop with her and just letting her be. She is the top hen so I don't think anyone (even the roo!) will bother her peeps. I could separate them from the rest of the flock (six hens and a roo) but then the mama wouldn't be able to get outside, and it is awfully hot so I'm worried about her overheating.

She's got them under a poop shelf on the coop floor. We are so proud of her!

So cute! Hope all goes well.
