Why so early?

I've seen so many threads saying the comb develops at 6 weeks ish, but I've been seeing a ton of comb and wattle starting at a mere 3 weeks on, and my SLW boys at four weeks have super combs and clear wattles. Or at least, two of them do. One is still probably a boy, and the other is likely female. My EEs were the same way; I could see a difference in combs that everyone here said it was way too early to see. I look at pics of other people's older birds, and the boys don't have red features nearly as clear as mine. Is there some reason they're showing these traits so early?

Also I find the roo who gets the "dominant" role develops faster, and the other one still looks more "pullet" ish, even though the comb is still much bigger and redder than the girls. I'll try to get some pics today to show you what I mean.

Each chicken is an individual. They have different personalities and inherit different genes, even if they are the same breed with the same parents. Some people seem to think that because their chicken developed in a certain way that every chicken in the whole wide world will develop exactly the same way. It just doesn’t happen that way.

I think there is a lot of value in people sharing their experiences so we have an idea of what we might expect or what can possibly happen, but we are all in unique situations with unique chickens. There is hardly ever just one right answer to any question concerning chickens where everything else is wrong. It’s more of a case of applying information to our unique situation.

I see the same thing. Some cockerels develop combs and wattles much earlier than others, even with the same parents.

I think with big combs at 3ish weeks is an indicator of a boy. Some roosters develop slower than others.. but it is not often you find a pullet sprouting a comb at 3 weeks. I've never seen it, and I've raised roughly 500 birds last year alone.

Like Ridgerunner said, it's an individual thing. People state their experiences.

PS: Nova Scotia?! YES! Maritime power!
