Just want to share my sevin dust experience with you...

I'm sure that no one really wants to use a bad chemical, but really gotta weigh benefits vrs risk, alot of labels have to state disclosure, please don't read the insert on any medication because bad effects are always seizure coma death - they warned you- right? I am glad to hear that sevin dust works, used with caution, because I don't want an infestation of pests in my yard, so far I've added it to their most frequent dust bowl, and the coop floor...so many things can cause cancer-or rather trigger cancer, living next to a high energy powerline for instance, cell phone use, this dye, that dye,all insectisides, I really just want something that works well so my chickens don't get the fleas that came with the new puppies, and me either, I figure my eggs are prob alot safer to eat than those that came from who knows where.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~DE would be a much safer addition to your coop than Sevin....Food Grade DE vs. Carcinigen Sevin seems like a no brainer to me....I use Sevin myself for fleas & ticks on dogs as it is safer than most chemicals...Shampooing with Dawn liquid soap KILLS fleas within seconds by drowning the fleas...The hair follicles on a flea create an air bubble around a flea when wet, but Dawn breaks the surface tension, bursing the bubble & drowning the flea within seconds....It has emulsifiers & surfactants that break down oils, which is why its used for washing animals from Oil spills exclusivly....It's SAFE! Even for Chickens....however, there is no residual effect on repelling fleas....Sevin dust is safe for puppies & kittens as a deterant after eliminating the flea population on pets, but the eggs will keep hatching without applying a liquid FGR (flea growth regulator) to stop the hatching....Appied as directed, Sevin is the best for ticks inside & around your house, but I don't think I'll be using it any time soon if there is a residual in my ORGANIC EGGS......DE is HUMAN EDIBLE & sold at health food stores for internal parasites.....My chickens can roll around in DE that's much safer for both of us @ about $22 a 50# bag, added to the sand....it can even be used for internal parasites as well...The key is to use everything in prescribed dosages, not just guess...RR
Does anyone know at what age I can dust my chicks? A neighbor brought two chicks by my house that her friend couldn't care for (impulse buy at TSC for her kids that she regretted). I kept them separated for 3 days and they seemed healthy. I put them with my other 8 chicks and they all started shaking their heads. That's mites, right? I see black specks around their eyes but none around their vents. I have DE but haven't needed it for babies before as they are in brooder inside the house. My original 8 are 3 weeks old, the other two are at least 4 weeks old. Can I dust them?
