I normally am on the chicken threads but need some duck insight! Friend and I just bought 2 doz. duck eggs for baking on a Craigslist swap. When the person dropped them off we asked how many ducks they had. Only 5 (??!!) - "white ones" so I'm guessing Peking. Now we're wondering how fresh our eggs are. How many eggs would 5 Peking lay in a week this time of year? We're concerned some of our eggs are already over 2 weeks old. Not the end of the world but not exactly farm fresh either.

Pekins are superb layers when they're young, and my girl gave me an egg every day without fail. If her ducks lay as well as mine did, that means they'd lay a maximum of 35 eggs a week.

Well max could be quite a lot, up to 5 a day(so 1 per duck)... truly depends, pekin aren't as broody as Muscovy so i would bet they would be getting more than i am right now lol

Honestly, 2 wks isn't that old, i mean you have to collect them, if your concerned float 'em... if they sink they are real fresh, they standup a wee bit older but fine to use, float? yeah, no good.

I believe there is a chart somewhere, not sure if it's here, i can try googling one... i sell my duck eggs, i date mine now but no one has ever complained about them. I sell out and even pre-sell often.

Frankly, Eggs in a store are older, rarely are farm ones unless someone is really booming with production and lacking in sales.

I will be floating them before use just to be sure. Totally understand that they are safe to use, but bought them direct from the farmer under the assumption they were uber-fresh. I'm sure I've eaten my share of 1 month old chicken eggs from the store in my life. The 5 ducks just threw me since I was thinking they would only lay 15 or so max in the past week. I feel better knowing they were probably all laid in the last week.

Thank you for the links! Price-wise we got a bargain. LOL

You could probably ask for the freshest ones, i know i sold a whole bunch to a catering business last month and they were fine with accepting eggs 2 wks old and then newer. As i said i date mine.

Wow - did not realize they could produce this many. So your pekin lay through winter? I may have to reconsider the birds I keep!
