Hi all, I'm new to BYC and a fairly new chicken owner. I have 6 girls, no rooster and 1 of the girls has been lethargic, panting, sitting down alot, tail feathers down. I've soaked her backside twice with inserting petroleum jelly in her vent in case of egg binding. I didnt feel anything either time but today her vent looked swollen and felt like there may have been an egg there..she sat in her laying box for an hour but no egg...this was when I tried another soak, heating pad, and more petroleum jelly along with a little olive oil...im very worried about her... any suggestions... was worried her crop may be sour due to foul smell coming from her and it feels squishy...like water and a little seeds... she ate fish 4 days ago and may have eaten some bones... her poop after the last vent check was whitish yellow, all others had been runny and green... she seemed to be eating and drinking some but not much and it had been hot here... just very scared and worried...

Please post with as much detail as possible about your hen, on the Emergencies, diseases, injuries, cures, thread, more experienced people monitor that and reply to questions. I hope they can help you.

Green and runny poo is a sign if sickness. Isolate her away from any other chickens incase she has a contagious disease. Put electrolyte mix in her water. If you can't get electrolyte mix, mixing in some sugar will be good enough. Make sure she's eating and drinking regularly. If she isn't, buy a plastic syringe and administer her water through that syringe. If you need further help, add another post to this thread and always if your not sure about something, ask for help.

Good luck and I hope your hen gets better!!!

ok this morning I made her vomit, it was greenish yellow and fish bones came out so I'm pretty sure it must be sour crop...I have duramycin... do I treat my whole bunch with this and how much do I use per gallon?

ok just have her the sugar water and she perked right up looks just like her old self... drinking eating scratching.... do I need to use the duramycin or should I just keep an eye on her for now?

Monitor her closely. Give her some natural yogurt which has live probiotics. Add some UNFILTERED apple cider vinegar to her water. Use one teaspoon per 30 fl oz if water. Do this for 3 days and she should be all good after that but incase she isn't, that's when you can use duramycin.

thank you, as a matter of fact I had already given her some yogurt this morning. I will keep everyone posted on her condition... thank you so much for your help...I've been reading everyone's post for quite some time whenever I need answers on what's going on with the girls.... hopefully she is on the up and up... she's still drinking, eating, and pooping... her poop is looking more solid and normal...I felt bad making her vomit but it must have helped... I'm a nurse and I can deal with patients all day long but when my animals get sick I get panicky and scared...I just love all animals, my girls have been great little layers.. and they're like my pets as well... thanks again!!! :)
