The next step in this really long process is coming up! The Torrance environmental fair will be held June 7, 2014 at the city yard. I'll be there with a table giving out info and answering questions, as will reps from beekeeping groups. The city will have a table where residents can note their opinions on chickens and bees. I'd love some input from chicken lovers, and help with research to make flyers or informational posters, and some people to help sit there and be friendly. lol.

Torrance Environmental Commission is slowly, slowly gathering data for potentially putting backyard chicken-keeping up for a vote by city council. The upcoming meeting is on Sept 4th at 7pm, in the West Annex Commission Meeting room (City Hall, 3031 Torrance Blvd). Last I heard from one of the Commission's data-gatherers was she personally was becoming more convinced that chicken keeping should NOT be allowed. This despite overwhelming support by Torrance citizens at the environmental fair earlier this summer.
If you are free, please come to show your support and help us move the city toward legalizing chickens for Torrance!

It went well. The Environmental Commission approved it to move forward so now the ordinance will be written and it will go to the Planning Commission. The information for that meeting will be posted on the meetup.com group "Los Angeles Urban Chicken Enthusiasts" but I will also post it here as soon as I see it.
The Environmental Commission said it was the largest group they have seen at their meetings. But everyone there was pro-chickens. As word spreads there may be some anti-chicken residents that show up at the next meeting so the more chicken supporters we can get there the better chance we will have. Planning is sure to be much different than Environmental.
