We currently feed our house dog a raw diet. This mostly consists of chicken since I can get leg quarters for cheap but also any other part of any animal I can get raw for cheap :)
We're planning chicks in the spring and plan to get a puppy at the same time, this pup will live with the chicks and be trained to guard them. I plan to feed that dog a raw diet as well, also probably mostly chicken (though we're thinking of raising rabbit for this purpose) and I'm wondering if anyone else has experience with this. I've read that since you're feeding them and not letting them chase down and kill the animal that they don't develop the predatory instinct. It's the idea that you can make any dog a fight dog under the right circumstances and like wise make any dog a calm companion. But I'm just wondering if anyone has real life experience they can share :)

Your dogs won't kill the chickens, just because they are raw fed. That's a myth. A kibble fed dog may kill chickens just because if they aren't used to them. Raw has nothing to do with it.

Your dog is already a predator by nature. They will chase anything from cars to cats, etc... If they are raised with the chickens they will be fine with them. I have fed raw for almost five years and mine don't give our chickens a second look.

not only was Rayden's favorite food rabbit, his favorite sport was chasing wild rabbits in the yard.

"His" bunnies were completely safe with him. I never pushed the issue by leaving them alone unattended but that is because things happen not because he was rawfed.

Agreed! Just like how you can raise cats and dogs in the same house :) If they know the birds right from the beginning they will be pals and your pup won't want to kill them. I feed my dog moose/elk/deer/bear leftovers when I harvest the animals and he looks soooooo healthy and shiny after! Amazing what a diet resembling their wild diet will do for their bodies.

My dogs eat dry food but have raw treats often. They go in with the birds all the time.
