This thread was very helpful. I just went out this morning to check on the first pipped egg. I guess during the night the hen crushed the egg. There was yolk all over the other egg, and blood on the neck area. It wasnt quite ready yet so it died. She is a first time broody.I took the other 2 eggs and put them in the incubator.
Oh my Lord. Never in a million years did I think my Brahma would do something like that! She’s quite gentle. She has killed two baby chicks as soon as they have hatched. I’d take the other eggs out but one is due to hatch any day now! I’m so upsetSo frustrating. I took three away from her. I hatched two myself, and the other one never did hatch. One of the chicks I hatched died which leaves me with one lonely little chickI want to buy her a buddy, but I can't find anyone near me with baby chicks. They are all a few months old.
She was eating the eggs too. She had never done that before either. I don't understand why she would sit faithfully on the eggs for 21 days and then kill them as they hatch.
