Broody barred rock

Thread Starter
I have a 6 mo old barred rock who recently started to lay n she's now getting more n more broody ev day. She's generally a sweet hen but while gathering eggs she's downright crabby! Is it normal for her to be like this so young?? I have no roo's either by the way. Someone help! ;-). Lol

Regardless if there's a roo around or not, hens will still go broody. It is normal for broody hens to be a bit cranky they're just defending the nest.

6 mos. is young for a broody, but I suppose it can happen. Here's a BYC article with advice on breaking her: http://www.backyardchickens.com/a/encouraging-or-discouraging-broodiness-in-your-hens

The chickens are sold! We sold off 150 roosters, hens, cockerels, and pullets and are down to 10 birds. Three ISA Brown, one Amberlink, one blue copper Marans, four black copper Marans and one blue Ameraucana rooster.
