Broody barred rock

Thread Starter
I have a 6 mo old barred rock who recently started to lay n she's now getting more n more broody ev day. She's generally a sweet hen but while gathering eggs she's downright crabby! Is it normal for her to be like this so young?? I have no roo's either by the way. Someone help! ;-). Lol

Regardless if there's a roo around or not, hens will still go broody. It is normal for broody hens to be a bit cranky they're just defending the nest.

6 mos. is young for a broody, but I suppose it can happen. Here's a BYC article with advice on breaking her: http://www.backyardchickens.com/a/encouraging-or-discouraging-broodiness-in-your-hens

We have a flock of 170+ right now: Blue Copper Marans, Red Sex Links, Black Sex Links, Easter Eggers, Tetra Tints, white Leghorns, dark Cornish, Buff and Barred Rocks, some barnyard mixes, ISA Brown, Amberlinks, Black Australorps, a Buff Orpington, and a little Buttercup, who's just here for the pretty.
