Help! What is this stuck to Pancho's bottom?? We just saw this today while putting her back in her coop for the evening. We brought her inside and soaked her for 11 minutes in warm water and she is now in the spare bathroom tub resting/pecking at it. She has available to her electrolyte water and chick starter for higher calcium content. This mass is hard - hence her ability to peck at it. And it is stuck in what I believe is under her vent?? Its directly below her tail feather nub.... As you can see from the 2nd picture, she wants to know what the heck is going on back there! Any advice or help?
Note: Culling is not an option on this farm - these are pets, hand-raised since weeks old. Thank You!

It looks like this hard mass is attached inside the vent and hanging out - but I have seen her poop around it and just now, to answer your question, went back there and saw large poop on her towel...so she is able to poop with this thing attached up inside her vent.

If you have plastic gloves put them on. Use some mineral oil or vegetable oil to see if you can lubricate the mass and help move it along.

It looks like a deformed egg or 2. After you get a good feel for it and make sure that it is coming out of her vent you can try cutting small pieces away to make it smaller. Maybe it will come out after applying the oil and you hold onto it and gently pull. If it doesn't want to come out don't force it. You don't want to tear her vent.

Is she bearing down like she is trying to pass this?

Well I oiled all around her vent - I pulled slightly on it until I felt resistance, it did not come free...

Is it egg? Do you feel comfortable cutting a small piece off to see what it could be? If it's just egg and shell maybe you can continue cutting until it is small enough for her to pass.

You can also try to insert an oiled finger to feel around to get a better picture of whats going on and whats in there.

It most certainly looks like egg - like the yolk of a hard boiled egg. No shell seen. I can try trimming some of it but it looks like the majority of it has already passed, hanging on the outside of her... I dont think I could place an oiled finger in there, she was very irritated with just the oiling around the outside....

Try to cut away what you can especially if the mass is stretching her vent. Anything attached inside leave alone. Hopefully the rest will pass the next time she lays an egg.

I'm so sorry but I have to go. I'll check back in about 30 minutes.

Take a deep breath and do what you have to do. Chickens are very resilient and I bet you'll get her through this.

Hi I would most defiently try to help her pass it. great Advice in above posts! If she were mine I'd likely try cutting it away or gently oil her up and see if you can help her pass it. I'd try to get it out as soon as you possibly can because you don't want it to end up giving her a prolapsed vent or any issues of infection with it being in there too long! This is very interesting and please keep us posted on how you removed it and how she is doing! I really hope all goes well for her! It does look strangely like an egg doesn't it? I hope everything works out great for her! Good luck
