Great photos in the snow!

Our flock is certainly "snow-shy"...and no eggs; cold feet! day 2 they ventured outside their coop!

One R hen has severe "molting": an aggressive BR rooster plus 8 sisters who peck her! I put Earth powder on her...maybe should try mixing it with cayenne!D.gif

Raised 8 Red hens, hatched 6 black link Bared Rock in a converted food dehydrator, using only a bottle cap for "humidity" and a "car" thermometer, set to 99.5F! Ate 3 roosters, all "Ahab" 's because they pecked me, their feeder! Ahab the 4th, now "Boaz" doing very well, with 2 BR hens and his 7 momma's! Sold one BR hen. Former farmr, nurse; now Under His Wings [Ps. 91:4, Lk. 13:14c], enjoying...

Hi there! I'm new to your thread. My name is April. I live in Varina, just outside of Richmond. It's cold here today and worse is the wind blowing. But my 1 rooster and 5 hens are out and about. I fixed them some warm mash for breakfast and will give them some more around 3:30ish. They seem to be handling the chilly temps pretty well.
Hi there! My name is April, and I'm crazy for my chickens! I have 2 Rhode island red's (hens), 2 leghorns (hens), a Dominiques hen and a Barred Rock (rooster). I'm enjoying learning all I can about chickens, and I'm sure I'll be learning something new every day!

Welcome Farmerfogg!!

I've been told that chickens handle the cold much better than the heat.  As long as my girls have somewhere dry to go, I haven't worried a bit about the cold/wet winter (yet).

Yes, I have also heard that about chickens. I just received my flock in August from friends who were thinning out their flock. It gets really hot here, as you know. But I think mine will do ok. I have them located under a maple tree for shade. Plus they have a covered run.

Do you heat or light your coop? I have decided not to. And it seems they are doing great so far. In fact, I am getting 5 eggs a day, on most days.

Nope, so far they're doing great in the cold. They say that it's harder on them to go back and forth from a heated coop to a freezing cold run... and besides - what happens if the power goes out?  With all that down, as long as they can get out of the rain and wind, they'll be fine.

my babies hatched in october and november have been outside without heat for about a month. tho i did put a 60 watt heat emitter in their house last night for the littlest ones. but it only goes on at night. during the day they're outside running around with everyone else.

Welcome to the Zoo!  2 Morgans, 2 Minis, 1 Standard Poodle, 3 cats, 3 pet birds and the chickens.

Dorkings and bantam Cochins mostly, with a few others here and there.

And of course, my wonderful Hubby, who puts up with me and keeps me in check when I start to get crazy.
