Chicken behavior - is 'huddling' on the ground normal?

Hello -

First time here asking a question so here goes:

We just started out - have 3 buff Orpingtons and 3 Ameracuanas (one turned out to be a roo, there is much discussion on what to do. I vote Coq a vin, but I digress)

They are about 14 weeks old - eating/drinking/pooping OK, but, when they are not scratching around being chickens they are often huddled in a corner of the run. The run is plenty-big - 10' x 20', and they have roost space.

I don't remember Grandpa's chickens doing this - is this normal, or are they trying to tell me something?

Its normal. I think it makes them feel safe. Evan my grown chickens that roost on the perch at night huddle as close as they can. I have four nest boxes with perches. About ten hens get on one and huddle.

Unless they're acting sick in some other way, it's normal. My chickens alternate between roosting and lounging around in groups on the ground. They like taking dust baths and naps on the floor when they feel comfortable.

Are they just laying close together, or are they actually piled up on top of each other like they're cold?
