I have a 8 day old RIR that seems to be having trouble pooping. She has never had a pasty vent or should I say never had poop stuck on her vent that I needed to clean off. With that being said the poor girl chirps as if in pain when trying to poop and only drops a bit at a time but her vent is big and really protrudes when she strains to drop. What to do? Is she constipated or blocked? I have read about prep H for her bottom, I have tried vaseline.......I am afraid that I will lose her. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! BTW, she is eating and drinking fine - she is loving the one on one attention that she is getting from me also:)

What is the temp in your brooder? What are you feeding her? Try adding water to her feed(so it resembles oatmeal)or a little bit of scrambled egg.

When my chick had pasty butt I got her a probotic that adds benifical bacteria into her gut and this really helped and she was cured in no time. The probotic I use is called probios. you can get it online for around 12 dollars. I liked it so much I Continue to use it now into there adulthood. I use it for my whole flock. The bennifical bacteria regulates there system and when the bennificial bacteria gets into the gut it can actually fight off bad bacteria. It regulates there stool and makes them healthy. You should give it a try.it worked wonderfully for my birds.! I hope this helps and wish you the best.
