Mites: I've tried EVERYTHING

what kind of paint ? will the toxins hurt the hens? I am new and we just built a coop so no mites but I want to prevent any occurring.

Paint with low VOC's (no smell) is probably best or make sure the smell is completely gone before putting them inside, and make it at least semi gloss for great ease of cleaning. Oops paint from Home Depot or Lowe's worked well for me in my bantam coops. No, it won't hurt the hens as long as it's completely dry when you put them in there.

I have had good luck using this product.. http://www.amazon.com/Monterey-LG6135-Contains-Spinosad-32-Ounce/dp/B002BP12LI\ Organic product works great. Mix it up spray the birds and the coop and nest boxes. Works good also with flies in the coop. Organic. Same product that is in Comfortis flea meds for dogs. Once you mix don't leave it in the sunlight it breaks down fairly quickly.

Next would be pyrethrin or Sevin Dust.

Here is a post that I put up on 8/3/13 about the Monterey Spinosad. I very rarely have to use it.. Page 11 of this thread.

I've had chickens for more than 5 years. The first 4 were incident free. Last summer they got scaly leg mites for the first time - it was tons of work, but I think I've finally eradicated them.

This summer I was hit with a few 'emergencies' - had to help a chick out of the egg after it was abandoned by the mother (once hatched, I popped her back under the hen later that day and she's fine now); had to repair a split beak; did bumblefoot surgery and had my first ever pecking incident (which was severe). Managed to put out all those fires and now my birds have lice! I'm working on getting rid of them and building a new bigger & easier to clean coop. I'm hoping that I can go back to having no issue chickens as its been one problem after another this summer/fall.

Unfortunately the more chickens you own the more problems that arise. I just notch it up to another learning experience and my research usually brings me right back here to BYC. Good luck with your chickens and here's to a simpler carefree flock. :)

Ok..... We've been doing weekly checks. Last Thursday we had 3 chickens that had a few mites, and this is after repeated dustings and everyone being mite free. We have been using poultry protector and just sprayed all of them. I have been thoroughly spraying the 3 with mites every two days. Tonight 2 of them have more mites now than they did last Thursday. AHHHHH!!!!

I guess I'll dust them tomorrow and then spray them after there aren't any mites. Am I wasting my money on this poultry protector? I do like it much better than the dust.

I've used Poultry Protector and had good results with it for on-bird sprayings. You probably need to spray the premises thoroughly every week or so with permethrin or liquid sevin or pyrethrum or ????

Thanks Betsy57. We sprayed everything really well last week. I guess my problem is that I think at some point I'll be done....maybe I need to accept it's something that needs to always be done. I'll keep on keeping on then.

Yes, there's always something to be done with chickens. Just when I think things are going smooth, something happens (injury, illness, worms, mites, lice, predators, etc.). That's it...just have to keep on dealing with 'thangs'. They can be so rewarding and yet so frustrating and heartbreaking at times. Good "luck".

Mite update:

It's been two weeks since I've checked my chickens and only one had any sign of mites today!

My roosters were both mite-free and had beautiful looking skin around their vents. We've been spraying them all with Poultry Protector when we check them. I have also sprayed the roosts & nest boxes a few times with Poultry Protector in between the flock checks. I'm not sure if it's the Poultry Protector helping or it's our diligence, but we're definitely seeing progress!
